April 6th. We left Tallahassee early for the coast. The original plan was to drive 30A to the ferry at Fort Morgan in AL and camp on Dauphin Island south of Mobile. It was not to be.
Everything started out great. First stop: Appalachicola. Such a nice little town.
A little nature trail had lots to see.
Next up: Port St Joe for lunch. More oysters. This time overlooking the marina. Lots of sun.
Then things went haywire. Between PSJ and Panama City the rain started. Not alot; we were still heading for a night of camping. We didn't consider however how incredibly long it takes to get:
1. Through Panama City
2. From PC to Alabama
Then there's the storm. As the rain became more consistent we called the campground and they advised us not to come. (it turns out they were hammered with storms over night with high tornado-watch winds) So we headed east, through Mobile, Pascagoula (a sad strange place) Ocean Springs (small and cute) and Biloxi (Vegas east). Dinner was in Gulfport: nothing special, but we kept the oyster streak going. Then we decided that the best course of action was to get a head start on Monday. So we headed to Baton Rouge. It was a lonnnnnggggg day.
Fact: I never want to see Panama City again.
Possible fact: Every spring-breaking family from Atlanta was in the FL panhandle today.
We want to revisit: Apalachicola & Cape San Blas.

Fun Fact from George in France: I believe Pascagoula is also the home of one of the weirdest UFO abduction experiences. I read about it in a paperback and later saw the original police video tape of one of the abductees -- so it's gotta be true!! Yes, the opiods are still flowing!
ReplyDeleteA UFO might explain Pascagoula... It did seem alot like a ghost town. Wait'll we go to Roswell NM! Do you want me to get you an Area 51 T-shirt?
