Big Bend Day 1

Sunday, April 13th

We started the day with a visit to Paisano Pete, the official "greeter" in the town of Fort Stockton. Later we'll see the real Roadrunners!

Then it was 110 miles through desolate ranchland to the entrance to Big Bend National Park.

We spoke with a volunteer at the entrance who gave us great advice us on bike rides, hikes and campground choice.

Our campground borders the Rio Grande. A short walk from our site reveals the river and some great ridges for sunset and moonrise views. After setting up camp, we rode to Boquillas Canyon and hiked along the river into the canyon. Another hiker took our picture.

The ride was hot and dry and dusty. Back at camp, we washed off the combination of sweat, desert and sunscreen, cooked dinner (fresh ravioli from the Austin farmer's market) and waited for sunset. Worth it?
