Bat Sh*t Crazy in Austin

Noooooo... just Bat Crazy.

See, there's this little phenomenon here, one of those Mother Nature things, that has turned into a must see and do for locals and tourists alike.

Under the Congress Bridge here, hundreds of thousands of bats roost in the expansion joints. Bats, being nocturnal, leave at dusk to feed (mosquitos are a favorite!) and do whatever it is that bats do during their waking hours. In the morning they return.

The people of Austin are indeed BSC when it comes to observing these events. Around sunset, the bridge and the areas next to it are completely lined with bat-watchers. Kayakers, tourist boats and canoes watch from below. Then, just after sunset, the bats emerge. They're difficult  to see until they get some distance away, when they fly in flocks that look like swarms.
This picture doesn't have smudges on it; those grey blobs above the building are masses of bats. Really!

Pretty cool, huh?
