Wildlife

 Monday, April 14th

Our first night in the tent was.... unsettled. Bullfrogs talked off and on and at one point I woke up thinking that the phone was buzzing, Uh, no. The next time I woke I saw the silhouette of a tarantula on the tent. Of course, I thought it was inside. Of course, it wasn't-- the tent was zipped. Then we got a big surprise at about 6:30 when the wind picked up and began blowing everything around our campsite. The front that dropped snow on north Texas and later brought near freezing temps to Atlanta unleashed its fury on us with a whole day of 30+mph wind. No biking!

In the morning, we joined the ranger for a bird-watching walk and saw a variety of birds that were unique to us.
Vermillion Flycatcher

She suggested that on a day like this we make it a driving day. So we did-- we drove 7 miles down a dirt road to hike through a canyon to a spot known as balanced rock. It was windy, but sunny and much cooler than the day before.
Hope it STAYS balanced!
Uh-Oh. Sheila got a little dehydrated!

There were more great parts of the day:
--The $1.50 5-minute shower.
--Sloppy joes for dinner.

Later, we hiked back to our sunset spot to wait for
the full moon.

It was so bright that it felt like a spolight was on the tent. Until it wasn't. At some point we woke to total darkness. WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL US IT WAS ECLIPSE NIGHT????? How could I be so clueless?
